Odisha Police Warns Against Picking Up WhatsApp Calls Beginning With Foreign Numbers +92

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police on Thursday cautioned mobile users against receiving calls from foreign origin numbers starting with +92 on WhatsApp.

Odisha Police took to its X-handle to advise mobile users to remain alert and not to receive calls from individuals claiming to be police officials and demanding money by bringing false allegations against their close relatives.

It is learnt that the Odisha Police decided to warn smartphone users after reports of fraudulent calls impersonating police officials poured in from different parts of the state.

Of late, cyber fraudsters have adopted this new technique to dupe common people by identifying themselves as police officials and bringing false allegations against their close relatives. So, Odisha Police advised people to stay vigilant and asked them not to share any information on receiving such calls, sources said.

Earlier, the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications had issued a cautionary advisory urging mobile users to be wary of receiving calls from foreign numbers, such as those starting with +92, on WhatsApp.

The advisory, released by the Ministry of Communications advised users not to disclose any information if they receive calls from individuals claiming to be government officials threatening to disconnect their mobile numbers due to alleged involvement in illegal activities.
