IMD Makes No Cyclone Forecast, Issues Rain Warning For Odisha

Bhubaneswar: At a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has neither forecast nor shared information on the formation of a cyclone, rumours about the cyclone hitting the Indian coast of the Bay of Bengal are spreading like wildfire in Odisha.

According to sources cyclone rumours emerged after a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology Roxy Mathew Koll made a statement on his X handle.

“The restricting factor could be a quick northward progression of the monsoon, suppressing the vertical formation of the cyclone. If that’s the case, this will end up as a monsoon depression bringing rain. Otherwise, it could develop into a weak cyclone of short duration,” tweeted Roxy Mathew Koll.

Clearing the air on the formation of the cyclone, the national weather forecaster said, the probability of a cyclone is still not clear. The depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression but the picture on the cyclone will emerge only after the system is formed.

“While the system is expected to intensify further, there has been no prediction so far regarding formation of cyclone”, Met scientist Uma Shankar Das was quoted saying to a media house.

Besides, low pressure will not make any impact in Odisha, IMD revealed.

With the formation of a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal coast, the regional weather office has predicted that it is very likely to concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal on May 24.

Under its impact, sea condition is likely to be moderate to rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 22 and rough to very rough over the central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from May 23 onwards.

Met sources said moderate to heavy rainfall may occur at many places over North Odisha on May 24 and 25, while parts of Balasore may receive heavy rainfall of 7 to 11 cm on May 25, under the impact of the system.
