Bhubaneswar: Former Chhatrapur MLA and CPI leader Narayan Reddy was released from Berhampur jail after 10 months upon being granted interim bail from the Orissa High Court.
Reddy was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Berhampur ADJ-3 Court in the Reserve Police Inspector Binod Meher murder case. Since then he has been in jail. Two others along with Reddy were released from jail on bail today in the same case.
In 1998 a meeting was held at Sindhi village over land acquisition for a steel plant by the Tatas. Over 2,000 people were present at the meeting.
Suddenly, there was a clash between those attending the meeting and the police. In the clash, Inspector Binod Meher was killed. In this incident, a case was filed against Reddy and 21 others.
In July last year, Berhampur ADJ-3 Court awarded life imprisonment to all the 22 accused in the case. However, by the time the verdict in the case was pronounced nine of the accused persons had died. Therefore, the remaining 13 were sent to jail to serve their sentences.
