Bhubaneswar: The BJD Supremo and Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, resigned from his position on Wednesday.
Patnaik submitted his resignation letter to the Governor, marking an end to his illustrious career spanning over 24 years and 89 days as the Chief Minister of Odisha.
At 11:30 am, he left his residence ‘Naveen Niwas’ for the Raj Bhawan, where he handed over his resignation letter to Raghubar Das, Governor of Odisha.
Patnaik’s tenure as CM of Odisha, came to an unexpected end after the Biju Janata Dal lost the majority in the Assembly elections by barely winning only 51 seats.
In a tough fight, Patnaik was able to retain his position in the Hinjili Assembly constituency, winning by a margin of 4,000 votes while losing in Kantabhanji by 16,000 votes.
The party also struggled in the Lok Sabha electoral fight losing most of its seats to Bharatiya Janata Party, which won by a whopping 20 seats out of 21.
Whereas Congress managed to win only one seat in the Lok Sabha elections.
In the Assembly election, the BJP won 78 seats with a clean sweep, while Congress won 14 seats.
