Jaleswar: Tension ran high at Mahulia village under Jaleswar police limits after an altercation broke out between two groups of women over observing Sabitri Brata on Thursday.
As per the ritual, Sabitri Brata is a sacred day for every married Hindu Odia woman. Wearing new sarees and putting on red bangles, women worship the mythological character Sabitri, who managed to bring her husband back from death. Women keep a fast and worship Sabitri for good health and the long life of their spouses to mark the occasion.
According to sources, the Mahadev temple at Mahulia village witnessed a huge rush for Sabitri Brata on Thursday. Two groups of women who came to the temple to perform Sabitri Brata rituals indulged in a verbal fight on the temple premises because their opinions varied.
One group of women wanted the Sabitri Brat puja to be done by a particular priest while another group of women wanted the puja to be performed by a separate priest. As their opinion varied from each other, women from both the groups indulged in a verbal fight which continued for almost 30-35 minutes. The situation aggravated so much that Jaleswar police intervened into the matter.
Police pacified the Sabitri Brat fast holders following which they performed the rituals.
It is learnt that police forces have been deployed to avoid untoward incident in the village.
