Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths today arrested a sub-inspector of police of Kujanga police station in Jagatsinghpur district for accepting bribe from a person.
The SI, Bibekananda Sahu was the Investigating Officer (IO) of a miscellaneous case registered against the complainant regarding a family dispute.
He had moved the Court for anticipatory bail, and the Court had ordered the IO to release him and his other family members on bail. However, despite frequent approaches, the SI demanded Rs.8000 bribe for the same.
The complainant informed it to vigilance following which the anti-graft officials laid a trap wherein the accused police official was caught while accepting illegal gratification. Soon after receiving the bribe money, the accused left Kujanga police station and proceeded towards Jagatsinghpur. However, the vigilance team chased him and caught hold of him.
The entire bribe money was recovered from the possession of the SI and seized in the presence of witnesses. Both hands wash as well as pant pocket wash of Sahu gave positive chemical reaction, confirming acceptance and handling of bribe money.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches have been launched on the government residential quarters of the accused cop on Kujanga police station campus, the residential house at Govindpur in Dhenkanal and his office chamber, vigilance said.
In this connection, Cuttack Vigilance registered a case U/s 7 Prevention of Corruption Amendment Act, 2018.
