Bhubaneswar: In a significant breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police on Saturday arrested a 36-year-old man on charges of duping multiple women on the pretext of marriage.
The conman, identified as Satyajit Samal from Jajpur, used to deceive women by posing as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer on a matrimonial website to lure victims.
Samal’s modus operandi involved chatting with women on the website, gaining their trust, and then asking for cash and vehicles. He would then flee to Dubai, leaving his victims heartbroken and financially drained.
“As the accused was fleeing to Dubai, the arrest was challenging for police. Hence, a trap was laid. A lady officer interacted with Samal as part of the plan and he was trapped. Samal was arrested and found to have Rs 2 lakh in cash, vehicles, and a bank account with over Rs 1 lakh. The police have frozen his bank account and seized his assets,” said police sources.
“Two victims filed complaints against Samal at the Capital Police station, revealing that he had duped them of Rs 44 lakh, a car, and a bullet. Samal, who was staying at Chandrasekhapur in the Capital city, had duped the first victim to the tune of Rs 36 lakh and a car and the second woman to the tune of Rs 8 lakh and a bullet”, said Twin City Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda at a presser.
He revealed that Satyajit was involved in chatting with 49 more girls on the matrimonial website. Police had seized two marriage agreement documents. Samal used to target divorcees. The accused used to take cash and vehicles from women after chatting with them on the matrimonial website. After being successful in duping women, Satyajit used to move to Dubai and spend time there.
