Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will soon fulfil a long-standing demand of the people ousted by the Hirakud Dam over the Mahanadi River in the Sambalpur district. The government will provide 10 decimals of land to people displaced by the project, Odisha Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari announced on Sunday.

According to Pujari, the displaced people will be given the lease of 10 decimals of land per family by December 31 this year. The land leases will be given to the displaced persons under the Hirakud Embankment Scheme.

It is worth mentioning here that the families who have given up their land and lost everything due to the Hirakud embankment project have been demanding rehabilitation for the past seven decades. To date, only 4,400 affected families have been given loans.
