Bhubaneswar: In a heartwarming display of humanity, a recent cadaveric kidney transplant at SCB Medical College has given new life to two individuals. The successful surgery was performed amidst the ongoing junior doctors’ agitation, showcasing the dedication of the medical team.

In a proud moment for SCB Medical College, a team of doctors from various departments successfully conducted the institution’s 15th cadaveric kidney transplant. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the selfless act of a brain-dead woman’s family, who generously donated her kidneys, saving the lives of two patients in need.

One of the donor’s relatives said, “One of our close relatives Rashmi Prava Patel, a resident of Jharsuguda, met with a road mishap on Saturday when she was returning to her village along with her son and was declared brain-dead. We took her to several hospitals in Sambalpur but in vain. We took her to Bhubaneswar as she needed an ICU. She was undergoing treatment at a Bhubaneswar-based private hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday.”

Her family’s selfless act enabled the cadaveric organ transplant of her kidneys, giving new life to two individuals in need. One kidney was transplanted at the private hospital in Bhubaneswar while the other was transported to SCB Cuttack via a Green Corridor and successfully transplanted into Bharat Chandra Rout, a resident of Keonjhar district. Rout’s condition is stable post-surgery.

It is pertinent to mention that cadaveric organ transplant is the procedure where the organs of a brain-dead person are transplanted into a living recipient in need of an organ transplant.
