Bhubaneswar: A special vigilance court in Keonjhar has convicted Bhagirathi Bhuyan, a retired Secretary of Deogaon Service Cooperative Societies (SCS), in two separate corruption cases.
Bhuyan was found guilty of showing undue official favour to loanees, causing a loss of Rs 1,323,081 to the government under the Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme.
The court sentenced Bhuyan to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and imposed a fine.
In a separate case, Bhuyan was convicted for submitting false debt waiver and debt relief claims by showing ineligible farmers and manipulating loan ledgers, causing financial loss to the Keonjhar Central Cooperative Bank.
Bhuyan was charge-sheeted by the Odisha Vigilance under various sections of the PC Act, 1988, and the IPC.
The cases involved Bhuyan’s misconduct during his tenure as Secretary of Deogaon Service Cooperative Societies, where he allegedly favoured loanees and manipulated records, resulting in significant financial losses to the government and the cooperative bank.
Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Bhagirathi Bhuyan following his conviction in two vigilance corruption cases.
