Bhubaneswar: In the financial year 2023-24, the state government collected a total tax of Rs. 1012.56 crores from gutkha, pan masala, and other tobacco products under GST (CGST+SGST+IGST+Cess), the state Assembly was informed on Monday.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presented the data in response to a question by MLA Tankadhar Tripathy. The Jharsuguda MLA sought clarification from the Chief Minister on when the state government last collected taxes from gutkha and pan masala, and what was the amount of tax collected at that time.
Replying to Tripathy’s query, CM said, “The Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been implemented across the country with effect from July 1, 2017. On tobacco products like gutkha and pan masala, a GST rate of 28% (14% SGST + 14% CGST) is applicable. During the 2023-24 financial year, the state government generated a total revenue of Rs. 1012.56 crores through GST (CGST+SGST+IGST+Cess) from the sale of gutkha, pan masala, and other tobacco products.”
