Mayurbhanj: A female elephant died after coming in contact with live wires at Jamasuli village under Betnoti Range in Mayurbhanj district in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to reports, a herd of 11 wild elephants was roaming in the Badampur area under the Betnoti Forest Range. A female elephant separated from the herd when the forest department officials were busy patrolling the area at night and entered the human settlement near Jamusuli Wednesday night.

The female elephant came into contact with a live electric wire meant to protect the paddy crop and died.

The corpse of the female elephant is lying on the land of Ram Hembram. Soon after the news spread, many crowds gathered to see the elephant.

The electric wire is still entangled in the trunk of the dead elephant. The forest department officials have not yet reached the spot as the report is being written.
