Bhubaneswar: BJD and Congress party took to the streets in Bhubaneswar demanding action against police officials accused of assaulting Army officer and harassing his fiancée at Bharatpur Police Station.
BJD women’s wing members gathered in front of Raj Bhavan, raising slogans against government. Opposition leaders termed the BJP government “weak” and responsible for the situation.
“The BJP failed to run the government. We are making people aware that BJP is a weak government. Suspension of police officials is not punishment. Strong action should be taken against the erring cops,” said BJD leader Lekhashree Samantsinghar.
Yuva Congress workers attempted to gherao the Chief Minister’s residence but were stopped by police. Some agitators climbed barricades and hurled eggs and tomatoes.
Opposition leaders demanded the immediate arrest of the accused police officials and the Chief Minister’s resignation on moral grounds, citing rising crimes against women during the BJP’s 100-day governance.
“Such treatment to Army Major’s fiancée by police officials is not acceptable in a civilised society. It clearly shows that crime against women has increased during the 100 days of government. The accused police officials should be arrested immediately and Chief Minister Mohan Majhi should step down on moral ground,” said a congress protester.
