Bhubaneswar: In a bid to combat drug trafficking, the State government has set a target to eradicate the menace within the next two years. To achieve this goal, the state government plans to make necessary amendments to the existing laws, including stricter punishments and fines for those found guilty.

Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan emphasized the importance of dedicated efforts by state and district-level excise officers in curbing illegal transactions. He urged officers to visit various areas and ensure compliance with excise rules and prevention of illegal drug trafficking.

During a review meeting with District Excise Superintendents, Excise Commissioner cum Secretary Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar stressed the need for regular crackdowns on illegal drug trafficking and liquor shops, as well as proper compliance with the NDPS Act. The meeting also discussed departmental work, infrastructure development, and training programs for officers and employees.

The Odisha government’s efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking are expected to have a significant impact on the state’s revenue and development. As one of the highest revenue-generating departments, the Excise Department plays a crucial role in the state’s economic growth.
