Bhubaneswar: A 30-year-old youth was killed in an elephant attack at Lakhapadar village under Kalyansinghpur block in Rayagada district, on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Salupu Kutruka, a resident of Lakhpadar village.
According to sources, Salupu had gone to his farm on the hillside to guard his crops. He was sleeping on a mancha (a raised platform) when the elephant attacked him. The elephant damaged the mancha and then attacked the youth with its trunk.
Villagers rushed to his aid after hearing his scream for help. However, by the time they reached the spot, the elephant had already fled.
Villagers found Salupu in a critical condition. He however died while being taken to the village he succumbed to his injuries.
Upon being informed, forest officials rushed to the spot to investigate the incident and sent the body of the deceased for post-mortem.
