Bhitarkanika To Remain Shut For 9 Days In Jan For Croc Census

Bhubaneswar: Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district will remain closed to tourists from January 14 to 22, 2025, for the annual census of saltwater crocodiles.

The Forest Department has planned a comprehensive operation involving 22 teams and around 100 personnel, including forest officials, wildlife researchers, and trained locals, to conduct the census. Soundless boats will be used to minimize disturbances, and tourist access will be restricted during the census period to ensure accurate counting, official sources stated.

“The timing of the census has been carefully chosen for optimal accuracy,” an official explained. “Peak winter conditions, exposed mud banks, and a favorable lunar cycle provide ideal conditions for sighting crocodiles.”

The survey will cover the park’s river systems, creeks, and water inlets through both day and night operations.

In the last census conducted in January 2024, a total of 1,811 saltwater crocodiles were recorded in Bhitarkanika, reflecting the park’s significance as a critical habitat for the species.
