Bhubaneswar: Julu, the oldest chimpanzee at Nandankanan Zoo, died due to old-age related ailment, on Sunday.
Deputy Director of Nandankanan Zoo Sanatan Kumar Narayan informed about the death of Julu.
According to sources, Julu was brought to Nandankanan from the Singapore Zoo on May 16, 1994, when she was barely three. Following her death, the number of chimpanzees at Nandankanan decreased to seven.
Notably, a baby was born at the zoo on Saturday, increasing the total number of chimpanzees to eight. However, with Julu’s passing, the number has again dropped to seven.
In another development, a Himalayan black bear gave birth to a cub at the zoo on Saturday. The mother bear, named Muni, resides in enclosure number 16 (B) of the zoo.
