Bhubaneswar: In the quaint town of Bargarh, the air is abuzz with excitement as the curtains are all set to rise on the world’s biggest open-air theatre, Dhanu Yatra.

This extravaganza will unfold the magical world of Krishna Leela in a dazzling display of music, drama, and mythology.

The excitement is palpable as the people of Bargarh are all set to host the Dhanu Yatra. The carnival is more than just a theatrical performance here. It’s a celebration of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and a testament to the power of art to unite and inspire.

The theatre which depicts the legendary dramatic story of Lord Krishna and his victory over the evil king Kansa will last for 10 days. These days, the town transforms into Mathura, the river Jeera symbolically becomes the Yamuna, and Ambapali is reimagined as Gopapur. The epic story of Krishna and his uncle Kansa will come alive through the performances of talented actors, who will regale audiences with their enactments of the mythological tale.

The entirety of the town is decked up in lights and decorations. At the heart of Dhanu Yatra is the majestic Raj Darbar (royal court) and the Rangamahal, where the actors will showcase their talents.

This year, veteran stage actor Bhubaneswar Pradhan takes on the role of King Kansa, bringing his wealth of experience to the character. Pradhan, who has played the role previously, is confident of delivering a memorable performance for the thousands of spectators who will flock to the Yatra.

In a significant development, last year’s King Kansa, Hrusikesh Bhoi, was not selected for the role this year due to a pending corruption case against him. The selection committee’s decision has generated considerable interest among locals and theatre enthusiasts alike, said sources.
