Odisha Ready To Detect & Treat HMPV Cases: Health Dept

Bhubaneswar: The Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department on Monday announced its readiness to detect and treat cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the state, emphasizing that there is no need for public fear or panic.

The assurance came through an official press release following reports of HMPV cases detected in Karnataka.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recently identified two cases of HMPV in Bengaluru as part of its routine surveillance of respiratory pathogens. Both cases involved infants diagnosed with bronchopneumonia, and both are recovering well without any history of international travel.

The release said that HMPV is not a new virus and is already in circulation globally, including in India.

Despite the isolated cases, there has been no significant surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases across the country, based on data from the ICMR and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation, with ICMR continuing to track the virus’s trends nationwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also providing timely updates regarding the global scenario, including developments in China.

Recent preparedness drills conducted across India have demonstrated the country’s capability to manage any potential increase in respiratory illnesses. The Health Department has reassured that it remains well-equipped to respond swiftly with necessary public health interventions if required.
