Malkangiri: In a daring heist, thieves broke into a Mobile phone shop and stole mobile phones valued at over Rs 1.5 crore in Malkangiri district headquarters town on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at Om Mobile Care, the largest mobile shop in Malkangiri town, with the thieves targeting the shop located just one kilometre away from the police station.
According to CCTV footage, the thieves broke through the back wall of the shop at around 3:30 AM. One thief entered the shop, loaded expensive mobile phones into a bag, and handed them over to two accomplices waiting outside.
The thieves stole mobile phones priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 1 lakh. This morning, shop owner Deepankar Sarkar discovered the theft and immediately informed the Malkangiri police.
The thieves discarded mobile accessories and packed the stolen phones into seven polythene bags. One bag was found abandoned, and upon inspection, it contained mobile phones.
The police have launched an investigation with a scientific team to examine the evidence. Police verified the CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
Notably, this is one of the largest thefts that occurred in the district headquarters. The thieves seemed to have deliberately targeted the police, leaving behind explosives, detonators, and weapons. The police have seized these items and are investigating accordingly.
