Researcher Nayadhar Padhial Who Fought For Red Ant Chutney’s GI Tag Dies

Bhubaneswar: Researcher Nayadhar Padhial who played an important role in popularising tribal cuisine Kai Chutney and helping it secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

As per a report, Padhial was undergoing treatment for a heart condition.

Padhial had dedicated his life to studying the medicinal properties of Simlipal’s famous ‘Kai Chutney’ popularly known as red ant chutney. His tireless efforts led to the Central government granting the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Kai Chutney, recognizing its unique medicinal properties and cultural significance. His work not only highlighted the importance of this traditional remedy but also paved the way for its promotion.

A multi-faceted personality, Padhial was an Assistant Engineer at the Baripada P&W Department. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he filed a public interest litigation (PIL) proposing the use of red ant chutney as a potential remedy for COVID-19.

The news of Padhial’s demise has sent shockwaves through Mayurbhanj, leaving the community in a state of despair.
