- Initially known as Kingsway, it was built in 1911 after the British Raj shifted its capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to New Delhi.
- After India gained independence, Kingsway was renamed Rajpath, and Queensway was rechristened as Janpath. Over the past seven decades, Rajpath has played host to annual Republic Day celebrations, symbolizing India’s transformation from a colonial rule to a sovereign democratic republic.
- In September 2022, Rajpath was renamed Kartavya Path as part of the revamped Central Vista Avenue, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This name change signifies a shift from an icon of power to a representation of public ownership and empowerment. According to PM Modi, the renaming of Rajpath to Kartavya Path marks the erasure of a “symbol of slavery” from history.
