Bhubaneswar: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband’s family members over dowry demands at Samantarapur under Tangi police limits in Cuttack.

The deceased woman has been identified as Situ Pradhan.

The incident occurred at her in-laws’ residence in Samantarapur village, on Thursday night.

According to the victim’s family, Situ was married to Mulia Swain’s son Rajendra in December 2023, and her in-laws have been demanding more dowry since then.

On the day of the incident, Situ spoke to her family members over the phone, and shortly after, her family received news of her death. The family has filed a complaint with the Tangi police alleging that Situ was murdered by her husband’s family.

Her family, meanwhile, alleged that Situ was subjected to physical and mental torture by her husband’s family members despite giving Rs 5 lakh as dowry during marriage.  As her family members failed to fulfil their dowry demands, they killed Situ.

Based on a complaint filed by Situ’s family, Tangi police detained Situ’s husband, Rajendra, for interrogation and are investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, the body of Situ has been sent for post-mortem to SCB Medical College and Hospital in the presence of the tehsildar and further action will be taken based on the autopsy report.
