Baripada: In a significant breakthrough, the police have arrested eight persons in connection with a series of thefts across various locations in Mayurbhanj district.
The accused have been identified as Raja alias Rajakishore Barik (20), Rahul Digar (20), Bhundur alias Manoj Kumar Behera (20), Asmit Patra (20), Sarat Chandra Patra (50), Laden alias Somanath Pal, Babulu Adhikari, and Shiv Behera (25).
The police have recovered a substantial cache of stolen items, including two bikes, cash amounting to Rs. 40,000, 10 laptops, 2 TVs, a personal computer with a CPU, silver bracelets, silver rings, a pair of silver toe rings, a silver waistband, a pair of silver anklets (for children), a silver ball, a pair of silver bangles, 3 mobile phones, and over 100 grams of gold jewelry.
The accused were allegedly involved in multiple thefts at houses under the Bhanjapur, Baripada Sadar, and Baripada Town police limits.
The thefts came to light when Vikash Patra (34), a resident of Ward No. 22 in Raghunathpur under the Bhanjapur police station, filed a complaint on the night of February 13 at 9 PM. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the probe, CCTV footage and other evidence were scrutinized, leading to the identification and arrest of two suspects, Raja and Bhundur. Upon interrogation, they disclosed the involvement of their accomplices, resulting in the arrest of the remaining persons.
According to the police, the accused operated across the Bhanjapur, Baripada Sadar, and Baripada Town areas and had distributed the stolen goods among themselves.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the probe continues.
