Kendrapara: A local court has sentenced a woman to 20 years in prison for abetting the gang rape of her 17-year-old classmate in 2023.
The Additional District Judge Court in Kendrapara pronounced the verdict on Friday, while also imposing a fine of Rs 18,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-year jail term.
The court directed the District Legal Service Authority to provide Rs 7.5 lakh in compensation to the survivor, who was a Class 12 student at the time of the crime.
The incident occurred on October 17, 2023, when the convict gave the victim a sedative-laced soft drink. Two of her associates then took the unconscious girl to a hotel in Cuttack, where they raped her. Police arrested three people, including the woman, who was then a minor.
The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Kendrapara determined that she was fully aware of her actions during the crime, leading to her trial in adult court.
