Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon system is expected to advance into the south Andaman Sea, some parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar islands around May 13, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das tweeted about the impending monsoon arrival, saying, “By the 13th, the southwest monsoon is likely to touch South Andaman! Weather conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the South Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands areas.”

According to sources, the southwest monsoon typically advances towards Kerala around June 1, progressing northwards in surges and covering the entire country by July 15. However, this year, the monsoon seems poised to arrive earlier than expected.

It is pertinent to mention that a week ago, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that a normal onset and advance of the Southwest Monsoon into mainland India is highly possible this year. The monsoon typically starts advancing over the South Andaman Sea around mid-May, with May 19 being the normal date. By late May, it usually advances closer to mainland India.
