Early Monsoon Arrival: IMD Predicts Advance Over Andaman Sea Today

Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon will make an early onset over the Andaman Sea, South Bay of Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands today, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Notably, this onset is expected over a week ahead of the normal schedule for the region’s monsoon advance.

As per reports, this year, the southwest monsoon is likely to arrive a bit early. It is expected to reach Kerala by May 27, whereas the normal onset date is around June 1. Typically, the monsoon reaches the Andaman Sea around May 18-19 and touches Kerala around June 1, advancing into Odisha about 10-12 days after reaching Kerala.

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the Andaman Sea, South Bay of Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands ahead of its normal onset date of May 21.

The IMD has stated that the weather conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance into some parts of the Andaman Sea, South Bay of Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands within the next 24 hours. Over the next 4-5 days, the monsoon is expected to progress into the southern Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the entire Andaman Sea, and some parts of the central Bay of Bengal.

Typically, the monsoon reaches the Andaman Sea around May 18-19 and touches Kerala around June 1, advancing into Odisha about 10-12 days after reaching Kerala.
