Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon has made its presence felt in the Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands, marking the beginning of the rainy season, crucial for India’s agricultural industry.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon winds have advanced into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and North Andaman Sea.
This has been informed by IMD scientist Umashankar Das.
Taking to his X handle, he wrote: “Monsoon sets foot in the Andaman Sea. Southwest Monsoon winds have advanced into some areas of the South Bay of Bengal, the South Andaman Sea, the Nicobar Islands, and the North Andaman Sea today.”
Over the next four to five days, the monsoon is expected to progress into the southern Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the entire Andaman Sea, and some parts of the central Bay of Bengal.
Typically, the monsoon reaches the Andaman Sea around May 18-19 and touches Kerala around June 1, advancing into Odisha about 10-12 days after reaching Kerala.
