Bhubaneswar: The Angul police have arrested the prime accused in the rape and murder of a 25-year-old woman originally from Angul’s Kaniha, who was working in Bhubaneswar.
The accused has been identified as Bisu Gochhayat (28) was apprehended from Raigad district in Maharashtra, where he had been working in a factory after fleeing the state.
This was informed by Angul Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Jain during a press conference.
“Soon after the crime, the accused absconded. To trace him, six police teams were formed, comprising two Additional SPs, one DSP, four Inspectors, five ASIs, five Sub-Inspectors, and three Constables. The teams examined footage from over 1,000 CCTV cameras across several states,” said SP Rahul Jain.
Jain said Bisu confessed during interrogation that he raped the woman in his auto-rickshaw while taking her to Talcher Road railway station. He allegedly diverted the route to a canal road near Kendupalli village, where he raped her and then strangled her with her long scarf (dupatta).
He later dumped the body at the spot, which was discovered by locals on May 4. The woman was on her way to Bhubaneswar, where she was employed.
Following the crime, the accused first fled to Gujarat and later moved to Maharashtra. He was eventually traced and arrested based on technical surveillance and CCTV footage analysis.
