Thunderstorms, Lightning, Gusty Winds To Lash Odisha Dists Till May 29: IMD

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for several districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph during the afternoon and evening hours till May 29.

In its midday bulletin on Thursday, the IMD also indicated the formation of a low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27. The system is likely to intensify further over the following two days.

May 23: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely to affect one or two locations in Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal.

Additionally, hot and humid conditions may prevail in parts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

May 24: Similar weather conditions are expected in Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur.

May 25: Thunderstorm activity is forecast for Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nuapada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.

May 26: The warning covers Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

May 27 to May 29: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected to continue at one or two locations across Odisha during the afternoon and evening hours.

In terms of temperature, the IMD forecasts no major change in the maximum (daytime) temperature over the next 24 hours. This is expected to be followed by a fall of 2–3°C over the subsequent four days, with no significant change expected thereafter for the next two days.

The IMD has advised the public and local authorities to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially during afternoon and evening hours, when weather activity is likely to peak.
