Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday clarified that the recent spell of rainfall across parts of Odisha is of pre-monsoon origin and not related to Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) activity, as erroneously reported by some media outlets.
IMD scientist Umasankar Das stated that several reports have incorrectly described the showers as Kalbaisakhi events.
“The cloud systems responsible for the current rainfall are not moving in from the west or northwest, which is characteristic of Kalbaisakhi storms. Instead, these systems are advancing inland from the sea, a typical pre-monsoon pattern,” he said.

Das urged media outlets to verify meteorological information before publication and avoid spreading misinformation that could confuse the public.
“This is not Kalbaisakhi rain, but pre-monsoon rainfall. Do not mislead people by providing incorrect information,” Das cautioned.
