Bhawanipatna: In a heart-wrenching incident in Poiguda village under Bijepur police limits in Lanjigarh block of Kalahandi district, a woman and her infant son died due to electrocution on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Phulmati Naik (29) and her seven-month-old son, Sabir Naik. The tragedy has left Phulmati’s eight-year-old son, Jagadish Naik, orphaned, as he had already lost his father eight months ago.
According to reports, Phulmati was managing household chores while carrying her infant son Sabir when she accidentally came into contact with a live electric wire in their home. Both mother and son were killed instantly on the spot.
Following the incident, an engineer from the Electricity Department, visited the site to investigate. Relatives of the deceased lodged a complaint at the Bijepur police station, prompting the police to register a case of unnatural death and initiate an investigation. Bijepur police seized the bodies and sent them to the Lanjigarh Govt hospital for post-mortem examination.
The bodies were handed over to the family after the autopsy. The final rites for Phulmati and Sabir were performed at the village cremation ground.
Zilla Parishad member Parikshit Naik, along with others, visited the site to express condolences and demanded that the district administration provide comprehensive support to the now-orphaned Jagadish.
