Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday congratulated Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh for his landmark victory over World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen at the ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament in Stavanger.

In a message posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister lauded Gukesh’s achievement, calling it “a proud moment for the entire nation.”

“Heartfelt congratulations to @DGukesh on his first-ever classical victory over World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. This win is not just a personal milestone for Gukesh, but a proud moment for the entire nation. He has shown the world what quiet confidence and fierce focus can accomplish,” Majhi said, adding that the future of Indian chess “shines brighter with every move he makes.”

Gukesh’s win came in Round 6 of the prestigious tournament. Despite being under pressure for much of the game, the 18-year-old Grandmaster staged a remarkable comeback, capitalizing on a series of errors by Carlsen under time pressure.

The result marks Gukesh’s first-ever classical victory over the five-time World Champion and has sent ripples through the global chess community.

The win also boosts Gukesh’s preparations for the upcoming Candidates Tournament, where he will represent India with a shot at the world title.
