Work Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan

Bhubaneswar: Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday announced that Bhubaneswar will have an underground metro system instead of the previously proposed elevated corridor.

The minister informed that the state government is moving forward with plans for a fully underground metro rail in the state capital.

“No new alignment has been finalized yet for the proposed metro project. The Housing and Urban Development Department has been entrusted with preparing the alignment. Once this is completed, groundwork for the underground metro will commence,” the minister said while speaking to reporters.

He further clarified that the elevated corridor option has been dropped to preserve the city’s aesthetic appeal.

“An elevated metro corridor would harm the beauty of Bhubaneswar. Therefore, to maintain the city’s visual appeal, we are planning an entirely underground metro,” the minister added.

The Housing and Urban Development Department, in coordination with the Survey Department, will soon begin survey work for the underground metro alignment. Following the completion of these surveys, the state government will take a final decision regarding principal approval for the project.
