Bhubaneswar: Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has been honoured with the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction. The award recognises his exceptional contributions to tropical cyclone forecasting and warning systems.

He received the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction at a lively ceremony last night at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Congratulating Mohapatra for his achievement, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Celeste Saulo stated in a support letter, “In India, he is widely known as the Cyclone Man! In the World Meteorological Organisation community, he is known for his outstanding leadership and his tireless advocacy for #EarlyWarningsForAll.   At WMO, we are very grateful to the IMD, which acts as our regional tropical cyclone centre for the Indian Ocean. It has greatly advanced the accuracy and effectiveness of tropical cyclone prediction systems, saving countless lives through early warning and coordinated preparedness efforts.”

“IMD marks its 150th anniversary this year, and WMO is 75. What a great birthday present to our Third Vice-President.”, she maintained.

“Dr Mohapatra is a widely respected figure in the field of disaster risk reduction and early warning. His outstanding leadership has elevated the India Meteorological Department to a key national and international player.  Under his direction, IMD has significantly advanced the accuracy and effectiveness of tropical cyclone prediction systems in the Indian Ocean region, saving countless lives through early warning and coordinated preparedness efforts,” she wrote.
