Bhubaneswar: A 17-year-old girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Keonjhar district on Tuesday morning, a day after she went missing.
The incident has sparked protests in the Harichandanpur area, with the family alleging foul play.
According to police, the girl had gone out of her home on Monday night and did not return. Her body was discovered hanging from a tree near the village the next morning. Initial observations revealed signs that prompted concerns over possible criminal involvement.
“We received a complaint from the family alleging serious charges (gang rape and murder). An investigation is underway and two persons have been detained,” said Laxmikant Pradhan, inspector-in-charge of Pandapada police station.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The police are awaiting the post-mortem report for further clarity.
Following the incident, locals—mainly women—staged a protest and blocked the Naduroada-Kaliahaat Road. The agitation was withdrawn after police action and assurance of a thorough probe.
“We are investigating from all angles. The forensic and medical reports will guide the next course of action,” Pradhan added.
