Bhubaneswar: The 78th Senior National Aquatic Championship 2025 (Swimming Competition) commenced today at the iconic Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The championship, scheduled from June 22 to 26, is witnessing participation from over 400 swimmers representing various states across the country.
The prestigious event is being jointly organized by the Swimming Federation of India, the Odisha State Swimming Association, and the Department of Sports and Youth Services, Government of Odisha.
A contingent of 14 swimmers — comprising 7 men and 7 women — is representing the host state, Odisha. On the opening day, Odisha’s Shristi Upadhaya clinched the gold medal in the 100m butterfly event, bringing early glory to the state.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Minister for Sports & Youth Services Suryabanshi Suraj, who attended as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, the Minister expressed pride in Odisha hosting a national-level aquatic event of this scale.
“It is a matter of great pride and honour that the 78th Senior National Aquatic Championship is being held in Odisha. I extend my best wishes to all participating athletes and hope they shine through their performances. The Odisha government remains steadfast in its commitment to the holistic development of sports and athletes,” he stated.
Highlighting the state’s plans to enhance aquatic sports infrastructure, the Minister announced that 13 new swimming pool complexes will be constructed across 13 districts in the near future.
“This initiative will significantly bolster our infrastructure and nurture swimming talent across the state,” he added.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including R.N. Jayaprakash, President of the Swimming Federation of India; Virendra Nanavati, Vice President of the Asian Aquatic Federation; Monal Chokshi, Secretary General of the Swimming Federation of India; Golapmoni Mahanath, General Secretary of the Odisha State Swimming Association; and Ashok Kumar Panda, Additional Secretary, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Odisha.
The championship continues over the next four days, featuring intense competition across multiple swimming categories.
