Bhubaneswar: Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Tuesday dismissed allegations regarding the alleged theft of ‘Modak’—a traditional ball-shaped Ayurvedic medicine used in temple rituals—from within the Shree Jagannath Temple premises in Puri.

Speaking to the media, Harichandan said that the Modaks, prepared for the ceremonial treatment of the deities, are not counted individually.

“The Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, has already clarified the issue. These Modaks are never individually counted, so the question of theft does not arise,” he stated.

The Minister criticised those spreading what he described as “unnecessary and confusing” claims, warning that legal action will be taken against anyone deliberately attempting to mislead the public.

“I am wondering who is spreading such false narratives. Such acts, in the name of bravery or activism, will not be tolerated,” Harichandan said.

In a separate statement, SJTA Chief Administrator Dr. Arabinda Padhee confirmed that a preliminary investigation had found no evidence supporting the claims made by Balabhadra’s Badagrahi, Haladhara Dasmohapatra.

He also urged the public and media to refrain from discussing secret temple rituals.

“Our focus should be on the smooth conduct of the upcoming Rath Yatra. We appeal for the media’s cooperation to ensure the success of this important festival,” he added.

According to the complaint, at least 70 Dasamula Modaks were found missing from a total of 313 stored in the Garada—a sacred chamber inside the temple complex. The alleged discrepancy was noticed on Saturday.
