Bhubaneswar: Amidst the charged political atmosphere at the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh’ rally in Bhubaneswar, a heartwarming scene captured everyone’s attention — when a little girl named Nilam Bastia climbed onto the stage and received a warm embrace from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
The moment unfolded at Baramunda Ground, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was addressing the gathering and Rahul was seated beside him. As the crowd watched in surprise and delight, little Nilam made her way onto the stage, greeted Rahul with a hug, and was affectionately received.
Rahul Gandhi responded with a smile, lifted her onto his lap, and chatted with her warmly. He asked about her name, school, favourite subjects, and games. Before she returned to the crowd, he gave her a chocolate and a blessing, creating an emotional moment that stood out during the high-voltage political event.
The spontaneous interaction drew widespread curiosity. Many in the audience and online wanted to know more about the girl. It was later revealed that Nilam, estimated to be around 5 to 7 years old, hails from Jagatsinghpur and had come to attend the rally with the help of a Congress party member. Having seen Rahul Gandhi on television and mobile screens before, Nilam was overjoyed to meet him in person.
“Rahul uncle asked me my name, what I study, and which class I’m in. He also asked which subject I score well in and what games I like to play,” Nilam shared with a beaming smile. “Then, Rahul uncle asked me for a kiss, hugged me, and gave me a chocolate.”
The moment quickly became a viral talking point — not for political rhetoric, but for its simplicity and warmth, offering a tender pause during a serious public discourse.
