Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said a low pressure area has formed over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and north Odisha, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the region.
The system developed around 5.30 pm (1730 hrs IST) and is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha over the next 24 hours. The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and is tilting southwestwards with height, the IMD stated.
According to the IMD’s evening bulletin, the IMD issued an Orange Warning for July 14, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Rayagada, and Sambalpur, where heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely.
Districts such as Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Gajapati may also experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, the bulletin added.
The IMD has urged residents and local authorities to stay alert and take necessary precautions to prevent weather-related disruptions.
