Cuttack: President of India Droupadi Murmu today addressed the convocation ceremony of Ravenshaw University in Cuttack on Tuesday, where she praised the historic institution’s rich legacy in India’s freedom movement and its evolving role in advancing education, innovation, and inclusivity.
Describing Ravenshaw as a vibrant centre of the freedom struggle and the movement for Odisha’s statehood, the President highlighted the institution’s enduring contribution to nation-building.
“Many of its alumni have brought glory to India — as freedom fighters, educationists, philosophers, political leaders, reformers, scientists and artists,” she noted.
Applauding the university’s progress in research and technological integration, the President said she was pleased to see Ravenshaw making significant strides in innovation and industry collaboration. She appreciated the role of the university’s ‘Centre of Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ in fostering ideation, translational research and startup culture. She also commended its efforts to increase enrollment from tribal regions, underprivileged communities, and persons with disabilities.
Speaking on the broader context of India’s development, President Murmu reminded students that the nation is in its Amrit Kaal — a defining period leading to the centenary of independence in 2047.
“Making India a developed country is our collective mission. The sentiment of ‘Nation First’ is our greatest strength,” she said, urging young minds to contribute with knowledge, skills and dedication.
Referring to the transformative impact of technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, and 3D Printing, the President acknowledged Ravenshaw’s initiative in embracing these advancements. However, she also cautioned against their misuse and advised students to wield these tools responsibly.
Later in the day, the President laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of three buildings of the historic Ravenshaw Girls’ High School in Cuttack. In her brief remarks, she emphasised the importance of quality teaching and robust infrastructure in shaping a conducive learning environment.
Commending both the Central and State governments for supporting the redevelopment project, the President reiterated her belief in the power of equal opportunity.
“Whenever girls are provided equal facilities, they excel. Today, women are scripting success stories across fields — from literature and education to science, commerce and technology,” she said, encouraging girl students to draw inspiration from these trailblazers and to pursue their dreams with knowledge, confidence, and resilience.
