Balasore: The death of Soumyashree, a 20-year-old student of FM College in Balasore, has sparked widespread unrest across Odisha. Today, vehicular movement has been severely disrupted in Balasore district as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers stage protests over the tragic death of FM College student Soumyashree. The protesters have blocked roads at multiple locations, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The Balasore bandh has garnered overwhelming support from across the district, with locals, traders, and students uniting in solidarity. Shops, markets, and educational institutions have shut down, reflecting the community’s strong backing for the protest and their demand for justice in the Soumyashree case.

According to reports, BJD MLA Madhab Das led a protest, blocking a section of National Highway 16 at Uttereswar, which caused traffic congestion with hundreds of trucks and vehicles stranded.

Besides, BJD workers staged protests at Station Square, disrupting vehicular service,s demanding the resignation of Higher Education Minister Surya Suryabansi and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

“After failing to get justice despite repeated pleas, Soumyashree took the extreme step of self-immolation. Neither the police nor the local Member of Parliament, Higher Education Minister, Central Minister, or Chief Minister responded to her pleas. In protest, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called for a shutdown in Balasore today from 6 am to 2 pm. We will continue our protest until all those responsible are punished,” said a protester.

Also, train services have been severely impacted due to the BJD’s strike in Balasore. The First Passenger train and other trains passing through Balasore station have been stopped from proceeding, causing disruptions to rail traffic.

“We are demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and MP Pratap Sarangi. We are also calling for stern action against those responsible for Soumyashree’s death. The BJD will continue to protest until justice is served”, maintained a BJD worker.

In view of the bandh, the district administration has made security arrangements to maintain law and order.
