Bhubaneswar: Due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi, the water level at Hirakud Dam has risen. The dam is receiving 3.5 lakh cusecs of water per second. As a result, 20 gates of the Hirakud Dam have been opened.
According to reports, the water level at Hirakud Dam has risen significantly due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi. The dam is currently receiving 4,27,566 cusecs of water per second, and its water level has reached 610 feet.
To release excess water, 20 gates of the dam have been opened, and 3,35,703 cusecs of water are being discharged per second. The water level is rising at Belgaon, Khairamal, and Baramula.
Notably, just three days ago, only 2 gates of the dam were open. However, due to heavy rainfall over the past two days, more gates have been opened to release excess water and prevent any potential damage.
On the other hand, the heavy rainfall has caused the Mahanadi, Brahmani, and Budhabalang rivers to swell. Saturday is expected to witness heavy rainfall in the state. Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall is also expected in interior Odisha and southern Odisha.
