Bhubaneswar: In a disturbing yet shocking incident, a 108 ambulance driver was caught sleeping on duty while transporting a pregnant woman to a hospital at R. Udaygiri block in Gajapati district.
The driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, abandoned the vehicle halfway through the journey, leaving the patient and her family members in distress.
According to reports, the ambulance was transporting Nandini Raita, a pregnant woman from Kanikipadar village under R Udayagiri block, to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
Nandini’s family initially rushed her to Chandragiri Hospital as she started experiencing labour pain. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
As the driver transporting the pregnant woman to MKCG Hospital dozed off behind the wheel, the vehicle was stopped midway, and the family members were forced to find alternative transportation to reach the hospital. The driver remained asleep even after being shaken awake by the family members.
The family members eventually managed to arrange for another vehicle to take the pregnant woman to the hospital.
