Bhubaneswar: “Battery Energy Storage Systems are the need of the hour as Odisha advances towards renewable energy,” said Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo while chairing a high-level meeting on production and storage of renewable energy in the state. The meeting also reviewed plans for installing solar-powered street lights on a pilot basis.

Highlighting the transformative potential of clean energy, Singh Deo said the state’s renewable energy initiatives have not only helped decarbonise the power sector but have also brought far-reaching co-benefits—improved energy access, job creation, reduced air pollution, better public health outcomes, and stronger rural incomes. “Odisha’s clean energy revolution is as much about inclusive growth and social justice as it is about reducing emissions,” he added.

Principal Secretary (Energy) Vishal Dev informed that the government is planning to roll out solar-powered street lights as a pilot project. During the meeting, a company named Bessium made a presentation on battery storage systems.

The meeting was attended by Satyapriya Rath, MD, GRIDCO; Kedar Ranjan Pandu, MD, OPGC; Saidutta Biplab Keshari Pradhan, MD, OPTCL; Nivedita Mishra, Additional Secretary, Energy; Arindam Dakua, Director, Municipal Corporation; and other senior officers from the Energy Department, OPGC, and GRIDCO.
