Bhubaneswar: A shocking incident of self-immolation has occurred in the Balipatna police station area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. A young man, identified as Jyoti Ranjan, set himself on fire allegedly due to a property dispute and family feud. Ranjan was admitted to the Balipatna Community Health Centre with severe burns and later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.

According to reports, the incident stems from a long-standing family dispute over property. Jyoti’s father, Surendra Nath, a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police, had bought a piece of land in the name of his second wife. However, the property was later registered in the name of his younger son from the second marriage, leading to a dispute between the two families.

Jyoti, who is the son of Surendra’s first wife, had been subjected to mental torture and physical abuse, according to his wife Vijaya Laxmi. She has filed a written complaint against her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brothers-in-law, alleging that she is being physically and mentally tortured.

The police have detained Surendra and his younger son Prashant, for questioning and are conducting further investigation into the matter. The incident has sent shockwaves in the local area, and the police are working to unravel the circumstances leading to the tragic incident
