Bhubaneswar: A 40-year-old man, who had allegedly set himself on fire following a dispute over family property under the Balipatna police station area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar today.

The deceased has been identified as Jyoti Ranjan.

According to reports, the incident stems from a long-standing family dispute over property. Jyoti’s father, Surendra Nath, a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police, had bought a piece of land in the name of his second wife. However, the property was later registered in the name of his younger son from the second marriage, leading to a dispute between the two families.

Jyoti, who is the son of Surendra’s first wife, had been subjected to mental torture and physical abuse, according to his wife Vijaya Laxmi. She has filed a written complaint against her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brothers-in-law, alleging upset with frequent feud, Ranjan took the extreme step.

Ranjan was initially admitted to the Balipatna Community Health Centre with severe burns and later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar where he died while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, police have detained stepmother of the deceased youth and started investigation into it.
