Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall in the upper catchments has caused the Mahanadi River to swell, resulting in a surge of floodwater into the Hirakud Dam. To mitigate the situation, authorities have opened 12 gates of the dam – 8 on the left bank and 4 on the right bank – to discharge excess water and maintain a safe water level in the reservoir.
The current water level in the dam’s reservoir stands at 621.69 feet. The dam is receiving 2,13,627 cusecs of water, and 2,24,670 cusecs of water are being released downstream.
Meanwhile, the dam authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the dam and surrounding areas. The release of water is expected to continue until the water level in the reservoir returns to a safe level.
