Bhubaneswar: An incident at a private school in the capital city shocked parents on Wednesday after a Class IV student was allegedly beaten by her teacher, leaving her with serious eye injuries.
The incident took place at Vivekananda Shiksha Kendra in Dumduma Phase-2, under Khandagiri police limits.
According to reports, the 9-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted by her teacher for failing to solve a mathematics problem. The child sustained severe injuries to her eye and was admitted to an eye hospital for treatment.
The girl’s family has lodged a complaint at Khandagiri police station, alleging that the teacher, identified as Geetanjali Sahu, brutally attacked the child, leaving her bloodied.
The incident has sparked outrage among parents, who expressed concern over the safety of children in schools.
In her response, the accused teacher denied the allegations of intentional harm. She stated that she would never deliberately hurt a student and expressed regret, claiming the incident occurred accidentally while she was “lightly pushing the child’s cheek.”
The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Meanwhile, parents and guardians are demanding strict action to ensure such incidents do not recur, stressing that schools must remain safe spaces for learning, not fear.
