Jeypore (Koraput): A devastating incident occurred in front of the local Superintendent of Police’s office in Koraput today, resulting in the death of a betel shop owner, P Loknath (59). The roof of a 30-year-old market complex collapsed, trapping several people under the debris.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Koraput Fire Station team, along with teams from Jeypore, Semiliguda, and Laxmipur, rushed to the spot with rescue equipment. The fire department personnel, including AFO S K Barik and another unit, conducted a search and rescue operation using advanced equipment like hydraulic tools, concrete cutters, and rescue cameras.
Despite their efforts, P Loknath succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Several others, who were injured in the incident, are undergoing treatment at Koraput Medical College and Hospital.
The probable cause of the building collapse is believed to be the continuous rainfall and the lack of safety precautions during renovation work. A total of 26 fire personnel were deployed in the rescue operation, which was closed after a thorough search.
